On the 17th of December 2024 the Neo Smelt consortium including Bluescope Steel, BHP, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy announced that the location selected for the 40,000 tpa Green Iron Facility is in Kwinana WA. Production of DRI is expected in 2028 using natural gas and hydrogen provided by Woodside. The technology would be expected to produce high purity iron with less than 600kg of CO2 per tonne of iron , only around 30% of current processing using coking coal.
